The Warsaw Flights Commemoration Organizing Committee in the RSA in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria once again organized celebrations commemorating the heroic Warsaw Flights of the South African Air Force and allied airmen who lost their lives during a military mission to support the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. The commemoration of the 75th anniversary of The Warsaw Flights took place on 7 September 2019, traditionally, at the Katyn Memorial and the Military Museum in Johannesburg.

The commemoration event was attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps in South Africa, the South African Air Force, the Royal Air Force, South African and Polish war veterans with their families, the media and the chairpersons and representatives of the Polish associations in the Republic of South Africa.

The ceremony was led by Martin Urry, chairman of the Warsaw Flights Commemoration Organizing Committee. An occasional speech was given by Colonel Dariusz Siekiera, Defense Attaché at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria. Colonel Siekiera paid tribute to South African pilots, who without hesitation devoted their young lives to bring hope and liberation of besieged Warsaw. The memory of heroic pilots and their contribution to the liberation of Poland will remain alive in the hearts of Poles forever.

The ceremony of laying wreaths at the Katyn Monument and the flyover of the SAAF aircraft closed the first part of this memorable event.

The continuation of the event took place at the Military History Museum of South Africa in Johannesburg. The invited guests took part in the commemorative party at which the folk dance group “Orzel Bialy” (White Eagle) gave a performance.

The event was streamed via the internet. The recording is available on the Committee's website http://www.polonia.co.za/warsawflights  and https://www.facebook.com/WarsawFlightsCommemoration2019/
